Recognition is not the same as Appreciation
Mike Robbins’ recent HBR article makes an important distinction between appreciation and recognition: recognition is given for a task done well, while a person is given appreciation. In other words, recognition is for the “what” and appreciation is for the “who”. While no one would argue that good work deserves recognition, it is equally important to be appreciated for who we are.
