12 Habits You Want To Lose
I highly recommend the book How Women Rise by Sally Helgesen and Marshall Goldsmith. In fact, I just finished reading it for the third time.
According to Helgesen and Goldsmith, These 12 habits hold women back from career advancement:
Reluctance to claim your achievements
Expecting others to notice and reward your contributions
Overvaluing expertise
Building rather than leveraging relationships
Failing to enlist allies from day one
Putting your job before your career
The perfection trap
The disease to please
Minimizing
Too much
Ruminating
Letting your radar distract you
If you are doing even one of these things... then yes, it's affecting your career.
You must banish these twelve habits to be seen as:
Competent
Confident
Curious
Visionary
A strong communicator
These qualities are necessary for professional success.
One of my clients (I'll call her Mandy) felt undervalued at work. She had a tenuous relationship with her boss, the work wasn't challenging, she felt stagnant and unappreciated.
In one coaching session, Mandy banished habits #1 and #2.
Mandy had firmly believed it was her boss's responsibility to notice, list, recognize and appreciate all of Mandy's many workplace contributions. In a perfect world, bosses would make that a priority.
But "good" bosses are busy, distracted, responding to urgent employee problems, answering clients' needs, and much, much more. It's your responsibility as an employee to inform your boss about your achievements, contributions, new skills, and ambitions.
With my guidance, Mandy made a robust list of her responsibilities and accomplishments. It was a big step to share the list with her boss. Mandy committed to scheduling a walk and talk to deliver her prepared speech to her boss.
The walk and talk conversation with her boss went beyond Mandy's greatest hopes. Her boss acknowledged that she was unaware of the full scope of Mandy's contributions. She showed sincere appreciation for Mandy's accomplishments and shared opportunities for new work challenges.
In one coaching session, Mandy abandoned two useless, career-inhibiting habits. It only took one session.
Don't let these habits hold you back from taking action at work. Coaching will make a difference--in only a few hours!
