Why you should try to be a little more Scarce by Cindy Lamothe
I love Cindy’s New York Times article and its especially important to read it now. January is a time to start things, seize opportunities and everyone is doing it. So you may be getting offers to work on projects, to consider new jobs or to make new connections. It’s 2020 and change is in the air.
But as Cindy says in her article And while conventional wisdom tells us we should eagerly embrace every opportunity that comes our way, playing a little hard to get has its advantages.
Study after study has shown that opportunities are seen to be more valuable as they become less available, meaning that people want more of what they can’t have, according to Robert Cialdini, a leading expert on influence and the author of “Pre-Suasion: A Revolutionary Way to Influence and Persuade.”
I encourage you to take the time to read her whole article, but here are the highlights:
Be less eager- playing a bit hard to get will make you seem more valuable.
Don’t jump the gun- your power in any negotiation comes from your willingness to walk
Know your market value-inventory your skills and achievements so you can accurately assess your value.
Adopt an abundance mindset- don’t let fear rule your decision making. It’s likely that more opportunities will surface if this one doesn’t work out.
Trust the process-trust your value so you can be proactive and see new possibilities
Enjoy this article and Happy 2020.
