Body Language Mistakes that Leaders Make
LeAnne Lagasse’s article is the first I’ve read that highlights the importance of nonverbal communication.
My leadership coaching sessions focus largely on what to say and this article points out that I’m missing a huge part of the story. Nonverbal communication is powerful and when the office door is closed, the stated Open Door policy is completely muted. I’ve shared highlights from the article below, but please take a minute and read the whole thing.
Three nonverbal mistakes leaders make that close them off from their team:
closed body language
always looking too stressed or busy to be approached
your office geographics doesn’t support your open door policy
How to become a nonverbally immediate/approachable leader.
They display a relaxed posture, and have a direct body orientation and open body posture
They use expressive and responsive facial expressions (and they smile and laugh at work)
They use open and expansive gestures
They reduce physical distance and barriers when possible
They make direct and sustained eye contact
They use appropriate touch for the workplace (warm handshakes, “knuckles,” high fives)
They use vocal variety (rate, pitch, intonation, volume)
They create spaces that facilitate communication and collaboration
